Today’s pictures are from our back deck. D’Arcy asked me to take a picture of our Harry Lauder Walking Stick (contorted filbert). We have multiple plants on our deck. That makes it difficult to get the filbert and its fabulous catkins showing in full detail.
My first instinct was to do just the opposite. Use the bamboo and the Chief Joseph pine as a backdrop. We then have the straight bamboo and the needles of the pine to offer conflict with the Dr Seuss style branches of the filbert. Just what do you let your eyes settle on? I personally like the image. My eyes wind up settling on the calmness that is the dragon.
So I decided to move around so that the only thing in the background is a very wet fence. The catkins are full of pollen. The next dry day we get will be fun. All you need to do is breathe on the branches to see bright saffron clouds of microgametophytes float out and into the air in search of a receptive female. Oh my…
